How Eliska recharged her mobile in Bulgaria

I used an electrical battery made by boiled potatoes to recharge my mobile.

This is an invention of the University of Jerusalem and University of California.

You need two boiled potatoes, two copper strings, two galvanized nails (covered with Zink), three cables with electric pins.

  1. Number the potatoes – potato 1 and potato 2.
  2. Put a nail into each potato.
  3. Put a copper string into each potato as far from the nails as possible.
  4. Use one of the electric pins to connect the copper string of potato 1 with the mobile (+)
  5. Use the second electric pin to connect the nail of potato 2 with the mobile (-)
  6. Use the third electric pin to connect the nail of potato 1 with the copper string of potato 2.

How does the potato battery work? It is an electro-chemical battery. In it the chemical energy transforms into electrical energy. The Zink in the nail reacts with the copper. As the boiled potato separates the Zink and copper ions and they can’t react with each other, the transfer of electrons flows through the copper string recharging the mobile with energy. You can try the same with a very small lamp and it really works! So, you have energy from potatoes!
